Truck Drivers | Congress Extends Highway Authorization

Tuesday, June 14th, 2011

As a truck driver, highway safety is of top importance. For those with truck driving jobs, an unsafe highway is hazardous to the driver, his truck, and his cargo. Through time you become aware of which roads are safe and which are not. You know there are some highways that you simply can’t drive on because of their conditions.  In a job where seconds matter, having to drive slowly on a highway filled with pot holes means money lost.

In an effort to alleviate the problems truck drivers face on highways, Congress has passed an extension to the Surface Transportation Extension Act. The original extension act was generated from an expired law called SAFETEA-LU, which was created to provide government funding for highways, highway safety, and public transportation. The new extension will last through September, at which time it is hoped President Obama will sign a long-term bill making the Highway Authorization program more permanent.

Bill Graves, President and executive officer of the American Trucking Association, commended Congress on their continuation of the act and said, “Nothing is more critical to our members than highway safety. This legislation will ensure that funding for important safety and enforcement programs will continue unabated through the end of the current fiscal year.”

The extension will not only provide truck drivers with the surety of safer roads, but will also provide employment opportunities to build a dwindling economy. However, according to AED President Toby Mack, the security of the extension will be short lived if Congress does not press the signing of a more permanent program.

“Congress must use this new extension period as a ‘must do’ window to enact a robust, long-term surface transportation bill,” Mack said.  “Lawmakers must recognize that surface transportation investment is the ‘bricks and mortar’ that creates and maintains the physical structure upon which our economy operates and grows, and is an urgent national priority.”

While the extension lasts, states will be able to begin making improvements to their roadways as the new construction season begins. However, long term planning must be delayed until a more enduring proposition is made. To learn more about the authorization act, visit http://www.fhwa.dot.gov .

Schnieder National Job RequirementsNo matter where you go you are going to see an orange truck. Big Orange is all over the nation, you see them every where, you always see them on the road so you know that they are a great company and they have been in business for a lot time. You know they have good business when a trucking company has that many trucks on the road you they most be doing something right. They won’t be disappearing any time soon.

The National Transportation Institute has certified Schneider National as one of the top paying carriers in the industry. Where they ranked the highest is among trucking school graduates with a CDL, for people fresh out of CDL training they pay the most. When you combine the training, miles, and the stability of working for a top ten carrier in the nation; most new graduates are not going to be able the beat Schneider National.

Another area where Schneider always ranks above the rest is in working atmosphere. The best people in trucking work for Schneider, when you have a business that prides itself in paying their drivers and understands the importance of family time. The company is able to focus on growth and getting better because they know they are not going to constantly be taking steps back when they lose a driver. Schneider hires with the intention of keeping you.

In an interview with recently hired Schneider National Truck Drivers, we wanted to see what they found when they where looking for a truck driving jobs to start their driving their career and why they choose Schneider. What we found was hands down Schneider pays better out of college. Also, Schneider is one of the few carriers that starts new driver benefits after 90 days. Most other carriers don’t start benefits until 180 day. When you consider that most new drivers just recently got a job, you can understand they do not have benefits and need them for their families. With that said, it is really up to you to make your own opinion….

October Brought more Jobs in the Trucking Industry

Wednesday, November 17th, 2010

October was a great month if you are in the trucking industry.  According to overdriveonline.com, 300 seasonal employees were added to the trucking company payrolls.  September was up 400 and August was up 200.  But, even better is that 15,900 jobs have been added into the trucking industry since March of this year.  This information all came from the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics.

To break it down even more in the trucking industry, payroll is up from 2009.  October of 2010 showed 2,300 more people hired then in October of 2009.  But, the overall, shows that the for-hire trucking companies are actually down 210,000 (14.5%) from January 2007.  These numbers from the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics only show for-hire trucking companies, not fleets or rehires within the trucking industry.  As the article states so well, “not replacements for existing positions”.  This means that the numbers may be skewed if looking at the overall pictures.

This is good news for the for-hire trucking companies.  It tells me that there are more products to be shipped out there and drivers are needed to move the product from one part of the country to the other.

Adding jobs is always good in this economic troubled time.  For people looking to find a truck driving job, this is very good news in that there are more jobs out there and more companies to work for.  Truck drivers are the resource needed to keep the trucking industry growing.  For hire trucking companies need good, safe, and experienced drivers to move freight and to keep the companies growing.
